A new study carried out by the World Health Organisation, has found that musculoskeletal disorders are the greatest cause of disability in Europe. Musculoskeletal disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and back and spine disorders account for 30% of all disability and show the largest increase in the burden on health in Europe.

In response to the report, the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA) have stated that governments throughout Europe need to alter their funding priorities. Furthermore, musculoskeletal conditions need to be a priority for resourcing to improve the quality of life for all affected.

Other key findings of the report include:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders are the greatest cause of disability, as measured by years lived with disability, among these populations and are the second greatest worldwide
  • The leading cause of disability in Europe is low back and neck pain, contributing to 21% of total disability
  • Musculoskeletal disorders rank third in the major causes of death and disability and are increasing due to the ageing population, increased obesity and lack of physical exercise
