acupunctureSo, what is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine, in which fine needles are inserted into the skin at certain areas around the body. It is a complementary or alternative form of medicine. Acupuncture is different from treatments that are part of conventional Western medicine. Though there is still some research to do to understand the effects of acupuncture, there is now some scientific evidence to prove its effectiveness.

What is it used for?

Practitioners use acupuncture to treat a wide range of health conditions from headaches, low back or sciatic pain and dental discomfort to infertility, anxiety and asthma.

Acupuncture is one of the services that our highly trained and skilled physiotherapists at Advance Physio practice.

Does it work?

At the moment, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE for short) highly recommends acupuncture as a treatment option for low back pain. NICE makes this recommendation on the basis of accurate scientific evidence.

There is also evidence to suggest that acupuncture works for a minority of other conditions, including migraines and post-operative nausea.
